Publications

After my thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2021, I began pursuing a career as a freelance writer. Most of my musings center around thru hiking and the outdoor world, and I have had the honor of being published several times. Below are my online publications to date. If you are looking for a freelance writer, please feel free to reach out to me!

I want to enjoy my time on trail, not feel the growing pains of my body once again learning how to hike from sun up to sun down each day. There is going to be discomfort no matter how physically fit a person is at the start of a long trail. My goal is to be better prepared going into this hike than I was on the AT so that my transition period is shorter and I am able to dial up the miles as my body allows.

After lots of planning and negotiating work schedules, it was decided that Magic, Truffles, Hangman, Pimento, and She Devil would all be on the AZT together in 2023.

“Have you heard about that hiking lady you like so much walking through Burnsville?” My parents are not connected to the hiking community at all, so receiving the vague text above from my mom was strange, to say the least.

It was the little-discussed sections of trail that really pushed my limits and made me question why I was attempting to thru-hike. There were plenty of times I found myself thinking, “why didn’t anyone warn me about this?!”

I had just walked from Georgia to Maine. What did they mean, “what’s next?” Was this lifelong achievement not enough for the armchair adventurers who virtually followed along on my hike?

My relationship with social media may be rocky at best, but I am grateful for the continued presence of the trail community it facilitates. I must remain mindful of the fact that I don’t have to take pictures or post about something for it to have been significant.

Beginning March 1, 2023, thru-hiker permits in North Carolina and Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) will double in cost from $20 to $40. This decision comes in conjunction with GSMNP’s new Park it Forward initiative, which will introduce paid parking permits within America’s most visited national park. Implementing the parking tag system will significantly increase GSMNP’s revenue.
