Day 152: August 21, 2021 (18 miles)

Sabbath Day Shelter - Redington Steam Campsite

Woke up nice and happy in the Duplex with Truffles. My motivation to get moving was the potential for rain, so Truffles, Hangman, and I left camp around 7am and booked it.

The morning hiking was super easy with very few ups or downs; the trail was mostly flat, which seemed to be a rarity in Southern Maine! Truffles and I chatted some, but most of the morning was uneventful.

Just before lunch, we ventured off trail to a nearby hostel for Steve’s “famous egg sandwiches”. At this point in the hike we figure we need to make the most of every memorable moment, so why would we not stop randomly for egg sandwiches?!

With our bellies full, we began the afternoon climb. Per Guthooks, the rest of the day looked like it would be straight uphill, so I was feeling anxious and unable to hike. It didn’t help that rain was in the forecast and I was worried about having to climb wet rock slabs. With lots of encouragement from the boys I hiked on, and thankfully it didn’t rain on us! We even went about treelike again for Saddleback Mountain and the Horn, but didn’t get any views because we were socked in.

We toyed with the idea of pushing 3 more miles to a shelter because of impending rain, but once we made it to the campsite we were too tired to continue. We were able to set up camp and make dinner before the rain, and we even befriended a sobo named Cougar Bait. I am exhausted and not looking forward to rain.
