Day 153: August 22, 2021 (24 miles)

Redington Steam Campsite - Maine Roadhouse

Today started off kind of as a shit show but thankfully got a lot better! I did NOT want to get up this morning, so I turned off my alarm, snuggled up with Truffles, and went back to sleep to wait for Hangman to wake us up. It was wet and cold and no one was happy at the potential of hiking… so Hangman got on the map, found us a blue blaze, and I secured us hostel reservations for the night.

With the promise of hot showers and dry clothes, we decided we could do anything in order to get to town. We had to hike 7ish miles on the trail in order to hit the blue blaze, so we set off with a goal. Thankfully the terrain was pretty easy with just a few humps, but the rain/mist made for less than ideal hiking conditions. The rocks were wet and slick, and we all had a couple of close calls.

Once we crushed the trail miles we hopped on the blue blaze that we thought would be clear… we were WRONG. The trail was overgrown, muddy, wet, and we basically bushwhacked for nearly 10 miles…. it was miserable, but we were all together and it was relatively flat so beggars can’t be choosers. We trudged and did what we could to make each other laugh.

After what felt like forever we made it to a logging road and were able to cruise the last few miles. I was experiencing outlandish chaff and was miserable the last hour or so, but getting to the road was a God send.

Gooey happy in the car with Truffles less than happy in the truck bed

The Maine Roadhouse might be the nicest hostel I’ve stayed at! Thankful to be dry tonight and to be able to take a shower.
