Day 159: August 28, 2021 (13 miles)

Pleasant Pond Shelter - Bald Mountain Pond Shelter

Today has been a nice chill day. This morning may have been one of my favorite mornings on trail - and I usually hate mornings. It was chilly when my alarm went off so I turned it off and rolled over to snuggle with Truffles. We took our time getting ready, so long that Hangman build a fire.

We decided to make some coffee and sit around the fire to procrastinate hiking - it was glorious. I felt like we were on a nice fall camping trip instead of a thru hike. We didn’t leave until almost 9:30am. It felt good to take our time.

We found a blue blaze snowmobile road to circumvent the first mountain and had a great time walking on a nice and easy flat road. It was uneventful but entertaining to talk to the guys.

Hangman, Gooey, Magic, and Pimento all trudging along

Right before returning to trail, we walked past a beautiful lake vista and decided to eat lunch with a view. It was one of the nicest lunch spots in a while.

Great spot for lunch right by a lake

Afterward we boogied up the small mountain we had left and took the bad weather bypass. We got our first view of Katahdin today!!! Crazy that the end is finally in sight.

First view of Mama K!!!

From there we hiked a few more miles to a shelter on a pond and decided to call it for the night. We had plenty of time to eat, hang out, and build yet another fire. Now that it’s cooling off again it’s so nice to spend time around the fire and to have no more responsibilities for the evening.

I will very much miss this easy way of living when I got back to the real world. At this point, we are almost within a week of summitting. I can’t wait but I also want this to last forever.
