Day 39: April 29, 2021 (17.6 miles)

Cherry Gap Shelter - Roan High Knob Shelter

Another big day and I feel pretty good. I had a great morning talking to a section hiker named Dave from Maine before hitting the trail. The trail was beautiful with very manageable ups and downs. I walked up on some AMAZING trail magic from 4th Quarter and his wife. They had HOT breakfast burritos and homemade cookies! I ate with the boys from the night before.

Very rare to get HOT trail magic! What a great way to start a big day!

I hiked out of the gap with Fuzzy Bear and heard all about his life in Louisiana. The ups and downs felt good and I stopped to get water at a shelter with Semi Circle and Tooter. I pushed up to a rock outcropping to eat lunch and play on my phone for a while before continuing on.

Enjoying trail magic from 4th Quarter and his wide with Show Pony

When I got to Hughes Gap 5 miles from the shelter, I had to hype myself up because I was worried about the climb. Thankfully it wasn’t as bad as I anticipated, but the last 2 miles kicked my butt. I love the Roan, but I was hating it today. At one point I thought I was climbing straight to Heaven instead of the shelter.

Rugged terrain on the way up to Road High Knob Shelter. This is the highest shelter on the AT!

I finally made it and had dinner with Anchor Man, Bathtub, and Manners. Creature, Dumb Horse, and Party Dave showed up and it was great to visit. I hope the weather is great for the balds, I’m pumped for a bunk and karaoke at the Station tomorrow night!
