Day 71: May 31, 2021 (22.7 miles)

Brown Mountain Shelter - Ledges Campsite (at the Priest)

Today was a big day and it felt good! I got out of camp early this morning, I slept great and had a hard time getting out of my sleeping bag so I was impressed that I was hiking by 6:45am. I knew it was going to be a big day so I wanted to get moving. The only big climb of the day was within the first 5 miles, so once I got up that I knew the day would be easier.

Once we got to elevation the terrain evened out and I felt like I was able to move pretty quickly. It's Memorial Day and we passed through some gaps with day hikers and weekends, but there was no trail magic :( A guy did give me more batteries for my headlamp, though, which was nice.

I was alone all morning and kind of bored, but when I stopped for lunch Truffles, Hangman, Pimento, and Slobber arrived and kept me company. The day got much better from there! I still hiked alone because they're faster than me, but they were all close by and we took breaks together. Green, McFly, and Pegasus all caught up and we took a nice long break at Spy Rock which was beautiful!

Great view from Spy Rock

We finally made it to the Priest shelter to read the famed confessional logbook and it was honestly kind of a letdown - not as funny as we'd hoped.

A trail tradition is to write your confessions in the logbook at the Priest shelter

We pushed on to the Ledges campsite and made dinner while watching the sunset. A great end to a great day, I'm beat!
