Day 8: March 29, 2021 (3.6 miles)

Deep Gap Shelter - Budget Inn Hiawassee, GA

Today honestly felt like one of the best days yet! I caught myself constantly smiling and trying to take it all in. We had a chilly start, but once I was moving and the sun was warming everything up, I felt okay. My right knee is kind of bothering me but I think I’m fine. We had a nero and descended into Dick’s Creek where we got some trail magic! Sorority Steve hooked us up with beer, donuts, and fruit.

Form thru hiker, Sorority Steve, dropped off some trail magic for us to enjoy

Budget Inn had a shuttle that picked us up for free and the Budget Inn has been everything I thought and more. The whole gang is still together and we spent most of the day drinking in the parking lot. It was super sunny and nice out so we hung up all our gear to dry, did laundry, and took showers.

Laundry day shenanigans

I felt like a new person after taking a shower and putting on fresh clothes! We made a resupply run at Ingles and spread all our food out in the parking lot to divide up and share.

Once our “chores” were done we walked to Zaxby’s for dinner. I’ve never eaten an entire Zalad and fries but I was full and happy. One of the Budget Inn caretakers, Stone Legs, built us a fire and we sat around laughing, talking, and drinking before heading in to restuff our packs. Today was probably my favorite day so far and I’m sad to see it end. We’re crossing into NC tomorrow and expecting snow this week… yikes!

Our first trail town was Hiawassee, GA
