Day 9: March 30, 2021 (11.8 miles)

Dick’s Creek Gap - Muskrat Creek Shelter

Today was hands down the hardest day yet. I felt like all we did was climb HUGE mountains. The day started at the Budget Inn. Ranger (Al) decided to go to the ER because of how bad her face was swelling due to a probable wisdom tooth infection. I got Kayla and I Starbucks at Ingles before catching Bob’s 9am shuttle. It felt weird to be hiking without Ranger, but she 100% made the right choice to get checked out. Kayla and I had a great day together, the weather was beautiful and we were excited to cross into NC.

Our first state border crossing, GA/NC

The majority of the day was manageable, but the first three miles of NC were BRUTAL! I didn’t think we’d ever make it to the shelter, but we finally arrive and Kayla and I talked about bed bugs and the impending wet/cold weather. Meeting back up with our traimly at the shelter helped too, and we made some loose plans for dealing with temps in the teens and flash floods over the next few days. There was a pretty place to watch the sunset and Goat made a fire.

Enjoying the sunset after a long day

I really like Butter and Road Soda, they are super frat but funny. Sitting around the fire was a great way to end a shitty day on a high note. I’m worried about the weather but hopeful we’ll get off trail…
